When Inferior Things Just Won’t Die

July 23rd, 2005 by Hennessy

Joss Whedon’s loyal fan base continues to beat the drum to keep Firefly alive .

The question that continues to plague me: How can anyone find this show watchable?
After plopping down my $40 bucks on the box set, watching five or six episodes chock full of wooden, very un-Whedon like dialogue, and my interest never really peaked. The stories never had conflicts that really mattered and there was nothing engaging about any one of the prototypical arch-types we’ve become accustom to seeing in westerns or I suppose, space-westerns. One of Whedon’s biggest gripes was that the series aired out of order and it was never given a chance. WAS HE TALKING ABOUT THE SAME SERIES I BOUGHT? Firefly is not The Sopranos, Homicide, or at least a little bit like Buffy. Character and story felt barely relevant in each episode let alone in as a part of a large scheme of things.

Be the judge yourself.

The real conflict—Go see a movie supporting a creative force I admire, while subjecting myself to something I’ve already dislike?
